Ask the Experts: Hardware-Store Linseed Oil

Q: Can I use the boiled linseed oil found in hardware stores for painting or for priming my wooden palette?

A: Metallic dryers, which may contain lead, are added to the cheaper, “boiled” linseed oil that is sold in hardware stores. Also, boiled oils get brittle and darken as they age. Use artist-grade linseed oil for painting and priming your palette.
