Ask the Experts: Resizing Watercolor Paper

Q: I relocated from the States to the Caribbean and have found that all the watercolor paper--Fabriano, Arches, Winsor & Newton--is too absorbent to float the watercolor paint. Is there something I can buy to resize the paper or save it somehow so that it is once again workable? How would I apply the sizing? How many coats? I have about 100 sheets of very good paper.

Jamie Wyeth: Combining Water-Soluable Paints

0609wyet1_600x449_1Like many artists accustomed to working with opaque paints, Jamie Wyeth prefers to use combinations of water-soluble materials rather than just transparent watercolor. He finds that layers of gouache, ink, graphite, acrylic, and watercolor allow him to develop images in much the same way he does with oil on canvas.

Ice Cube Color Trays

To eliminate waste of acrylic paint and interruption of your painting to lay out more paint, put your mixed colors into plastic ice cube trays. Add a few drops of water to each compartment after a day's painting and store the tray in a plastic bag.
